Event 5: Conference in Croatia

The event took place in Labin and Rabac (Croatia) from 26/09/2018 to 27/09/2018. It involved 113 participants, including:

  • 8 participants from Slovakia
  • 4 participants from Czech Republic
  • 3 participants from Romania
  • 2 participants from Hungary
  • 3 participants from Latvia
  • 4 participants from Serbia
  • 4 participants from Slovenia
  • 3 participants from Italy
  • 82 participants from Croatia

Town of Labin hosted the fifth event of the project titled European Network for Social Integration Entrepreneurship: social inclusion and development of rural regions for a better European future - ENSIE.

First day of conference took place on 26/09/2018 at polyvalent hall of the city library Labin. The conference was opened by Deputy Mayor of the Town of Labin, Mrs. Federika Mohorović Čekada, who emphasized the importance of cooperation in the area of social entrepreneurship, for the benefit of the entire local community. "I believe that such projects can help all partners to learn from each other. We are particularly pleased that Labin Town is mentioned as an example of good practice wih projects like Inpromo and the Humana Nova Istra cooperative. Reconnecting to the labor market and removing social inequality is something that the Town of Labin will always support, "concluded Mohorovic Čekada, and wished all the participants a pleasant stay and quality work.

Mrs. Renata Kiršić, regional director of ethical funding foundation and social economy practitioner and expert, presented the story of social economy in Croatia from 1990s to present day, explained different types of business models, access to finance and gave „tips & tricks“ how to survive as a social entrepreneur in Croatia. She also presented best practice examples of social entreprises in Croatia such as ACT group, Humana Nova, ethical funding foundation, Punkt, Brodoto and green energy cooperative. The high school students, accompanied by their professors, also attended the conference, some of whom were also members of the youth council. They had the opportunity to become familiar with the concept of social entrepreneurship and to ask questions.

After the presentation, representatives of Town of Labin organized a guided tour to the old part of town Labin to discover the historical and cultural features as well as the local gastronomy with olive oil tasting with expert explanations of William Negri, well known oil producer. The meeting continued with a visit at the Labin museum that offers an overview of the history of Labin through a selection of important events shown in chronological order, thematic units and interactive displays.

The afternoon was reserved for study visit - a tour of social enterprises in Labin where project partners had the opportunity to get acquainted with local social enterprises initiatives, such us sorting plant and Second hand shop Humana Nova, Inpromo Association and the Center for Inclusion and Community Support. Project partners had an opportunity to get acquainted with the organization, work methods and type of products of these social enterprises.

Second day of conference took place on 27/09/2018 at hotel Hedera conference hall. Each partner presented its current state in the field of local social integration, social enterprises, reducing unemployment and poverty with main focus on the ways of financing start-ups of social enterprises in their country.

After the presentations, representatives of each partner discussed about the remaining obligations of each project partner and the agreement on the upcoming meeting of project partners which will be held in Hungary.

The afternoon was reserved for group work on recommendations for the development of social enterprises. Mrs. Renata Kiršić has led the workshop and shared a lot of her own experience.
